4-HO-MET is also referred to as metocin, methylcybin, and 4-hydroxy-N,N-ethyl-methyltryptamine. It is a psychedelic tryptamine with effects that are quite similar to psilocin and psilocybin (Kjellgren et al., 2011). With regard to positive effects, users have described “feelings of euphoria, elation and heightened energy, as well as effortless enjoyment and pleasure” (Kjellgren). Nonetheless, negative effects were also reported such as “discomfort, chaos and loss of control” and “overwhelming intensity, anxiety, fear and paranoia” (Kjellgren). Oral dosages of 4-HO-MET are reported to range from 2 mg – 25 mg, and the duration of effects usually lasts from 4 – 6 hours (Erowid, 2012).

Side Effects & Adverse Reactions:

4-HO-MET is a very new substance, and little is known about its side effects, adverse reactions, long term damage, and/or addiction potential. According to Erowid (2012), some of the negative effects reported by recreational users include:

  • anxiety
  • jaw tension
  • confusion
  • nausea
  • light to mild dehydration
  • sweating
  • sensation of cold / shivers
  • some users report slight hypoxia at higher doses

Kjellgren et al. (2011) noted that some users also reported negative effects (lasting for up to three days) after the experience, such as:

  • headaches
  • mental and physical fatigue
  • insomnia

Remember, research chemicals are experimental chemicals that are not approved for human consumption. This is because not enough data exists currently about their effects in humans. Although some people are willing to ingest the research chemical 4-HO-MET, it is unreasonable to assume that it is in any way safe to use recreationally.
