Overview:
Lithium carbonate is a chemical compound of lithium and carbonate, that is used as a mood stabilizer in psychiatric treatment of manic states and bipolar disorder. Its most common alternative is lithium orotate. Lithium is prescribed for children, over the age of 12 years, and adults.
Lithium carbonate is sold as Carbolith®, Cibalith-S®, Duralith®, Eskalith®, Lithane®, Lithizine®, Lithobid®, Lithonate® and Lithotabs®.
Upon ingestion Lithium becomes widely distributed in the central nervous system and interacts with a number of neurotransmitters and receptors, decreasing noradrenaline release and increasing serotonin synthesis.
