Mandrake Trip Report #1
by Cactguy - January 13, 2011
I am writing this a cautionary experience. This experience may be somewhat atypical due to what turned out to be a usually large dose. Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum) contains the tropane alkaloids: (scopolamine, atropine, apotropine, hyoscamine, hyoscine, cuscohygrine, solandrine, mandragorine.
Weight: 200 lbs
Sex: Male
Dose: 6 Berries (less than an ounce of material)
The berries were gathered in the wild and proved far more potent than or research had indicated. (One book cited the berries as being safer than the root which contains a higher concentration of alkaloids.)
Several individuals took the berries in varying quantities and all who took the effective dose noticed an extremely delayed onset of effects as much as 12 hours later. In fact it was not until the next day that the hallucinogenic effects where felt by any individuals.
The auditory and visual hallucinations where extreme, often times you would find yourself in conversation with a friend only to have them disappear mid sentence. Bushes and trees talked to individuals. For myself and another individual it was almost impossible to tell reality from the trip which lead to a number a scary situations and ultimately the hospitable. At no point did I experience euphoria of any-kind. Instead it was characterized by fear and confusion.
The trip to the hospital saved my life, the severe dehydration (even though water was consumed often) and toxic effects on the liver where very serious.
This is what happens when does bad (or incomplete) research and takes more than a test dose. Its now over ten years later and I have not nor will I ever again use any tropane alkaloid.
