Opium Poppies (Papaver somniferum) Recipe

What you will need:
*dried opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) pods, as many as you would like.
*large boiling pot
*another large pot or huge bowl with the capacity of the boiling pot
*plenty water and or vodka, or isopropal alcohol, or methanol (to speed up the evap, and also to help pull the alkaloids that are water resistant)
*large funnel
*plenty coffee filters
*blender or coffee grinder
*pasta or vegetable strainer (the plastic or metal bowl shaped device with hundreds or holes in it)
*large pyrex dish, or new skillet with Teflon cooking surface
*methyl alcohol (methanol) at least 2 bottles i prefer more just to be safe. Methanol can be found at any auto parts store. It is a yellow bottle with blue letters "HEET" they are 12oz bottles for anywhere from $1.00 to $3.00.
*heat source (stovetop)
Procedure:
Take the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) pods, remove the stem and the little hard knob at the bottom (save those for rainy day) then pour out the seeds into separate container. Crush the pods with hands once seds are gone, place pods into boiling pot or original container with the new pods. do this until you have no more un-crushed pods.
Now a handful at a time, using a blender or coffee grinder, pulverize the pods down into as fine of a powder you can.
Once it is all dust put into large pot. fill the pot just above the top of the powder with either all water and a small amount of some form of alcohol, or my preference is to go 50/ 50 water to alcohol ratio or even 2/3 alcohol to 1 part water. The reason I prefer a lot of alcohol is so it evaporates faster.
Boil it for a good 30 minutes or so, stirring occasionally. Although not necessary I boil for about an hour, but not a rapid boil, just barely bubbling.
Then pour the contents into the other pot or large bowl. wash the boiling pot (skip this whole step if you will use the other pot for more boiling as i would).
Then i use a vegetable strainer, place a white tee shirt, or piece of linen cloth over and in the strainer. must be large enough to hang out of the strainer on all sides ten or more inches at least on its shortest side.
Set strainer in top of the other pot or large bowl (preferably pot) and pour the hot soup into the strainer. let it all drain through. the next part can be painful. either let it sit and cool down, or do like myself, and let it cool for only a couple minutes (i don't want the liquid to evaporate while still in the pods if i can help it).
Take the edges of the linen and lift it all up, holding the plant material in a wad at the bottom. start twisting it to constrict down on the plant material mass. once it gets tight you will notice it is very hot. either tough it out and twist more if you can, or use a glove or some other means of twisting it within your pain threshold. once it is very very tight, i like to while holding the twisted cloth, i set the ball of plant material down in the strainer, and using my other hand often with a small pot lid or something flattish with a handle on top i push down on the plant material over and over until i am sure to have removed as much liquid as possible.
Open the cloth, and let the poppy material dry out for another day. open it to keep from molding in the meantime.
Place the pot containing the brown liquid back on the burner. let it boil down, but be sure to not let it burn. stir occasionally and use a fan to help if possible. evaporate it all the way down until it is thick like a heavy gravy. thicker than honey, but not so thick it is hard (you can dry it completely, but it just causes more work for the next step).
Let it cool down quite a lot. while still slightly warm, add one bottle of methanol. you will see a rapid change. it will go from a deep dark brown to off white!! stir the methanol in, until you see the whole thing separate. you wand off white solids, and deep red that is so dark it is black liquid. keep stirring it around for several minutes.
Let it settle for several minutes, and carefully pour the dark liquid into the other (clean) pot or bowl. then use the next bottle of methanol, stir it and do as before. depending on the color of the off white material i may use another bottle of methanol.
Once the methanol is all collected, take a coffee filter, fold it in half, then fold it into thirds, and unfold one of the thirds, keeping one of them still folded, and open it up, it will be cone shaped to fit your funnel. place it in the funnel. hold it above the pyrex dish, and pour the methanol through it.
The liquid will be perfectly clear, but too dark to really see through.
Put it on the burner with a fan blowing on it, don't let it boil, but let it simmer all the way dry. it may take a while, but not too long, be patient. when it is almost dry, i like to scrape the gooey substance into a Teflon coated pan, that way when dry it is easily collected. it is not dry until it is a hard almost black substance that will break like glass. you can remove it from heat once it is almost hard to let it cool and finish drying at the same time. it is hard to scrape it from the glass but easily cracks and chips or peels out of the Teflon.
You now have the best purest smokeable opium possible, short of collecting the resin from the poppy itself and cooking it to have cooked opium. you can chase the dragon, top some pot with it and my ultimate favorite thing to do with it, is just smell it. sooooo nice. enjoy.
Side Effects:
The only concern is the fact that methanol is extremely poisonous. 10ml will cause you to go blind. this is why you must be very sure it is gone from the opium before you consume it. one good way to make sure it is completely gone, woild be to add a very small amount of water, maybe a tablespoon full to the end process and mix it all in together, the water will not even begin being evaporated until the methanol is completely gone. other than that, its completely safe. and once dry, you can use it to make tea, or to eat as a pill for pain or however you choose. but be careful, it is a very very concentrated highly potent substance with many alkaloids mixed together, the main ones are morphine, and codeine, so taking it any way other than smoking, must be done very lightly until you know your tolerance.
