Addictive Potential: None

Emergency Room Visits Yearly: Unknown

Mandatory Minimum Sentence: Unknown

Mechanism of Action: Increases the Neurotransmitter Serotonin

Overview:

The Name Bufotenine, also spelled Bufotenin, originates from the psychoactive toad Bufo Alvarius, which secretes 5-MeO-DMT and Bufotenine from their glands. It is very similar to the chemical structure of serotonin.

Bufotenine is basically inactive even though it is classified as a Schedule I hallucinogen. The United States government deemed Bufotenine as a "dangerous drug" with results from one study of 14 schizophrenic patients at a state mental hospital and two convicts in a state prison. They injected the convicts over the course of three minutes with a solution of Bufotenine as the salt. In this single observation they observed a release of serotonin in the blood. This was all the data they needed to make it illegal.
