There are three entheogenic religions legally practicing in the United States. These include the Native American Church, the União do Vegetal (Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal or UDV), and the Santo Daime. These religions are based upon the spiritual consumption of either ayahuasca (UDV and Santo Daime) or peyote (Native American Church). The psychoactive constituent in ayahuasca is DMT which is a schedule 1 illegal substance in the United States. The psychoactive constituent in peyote is mescaline which is also a schedule 1 illegal substance in the United States. However, it is legal for these religions to use these substances in their spiritual ceremonies.
